Our last ride of the tour. A happy / sad mixture of emotions for most. A sense of accomplishment but sad to see it end at the same time. Riding and the daily drill has become our lives over the past 50 days. Many friendships made and good times to remember.
For me it’s also been a happy privilege to ride it for St. Jude. After all of the donations are tallied, including Jacquie’s and mine, together we will have raised over $15,000. Thanks once again for your generosity and caring !! I hope you’ll consider signing up to donate monthly in whatever amount to St. Jude
Today’s ride started out with the usual short steep hills one after the other through thickly wooded, often shady roads. We stopped halfway for coffee at Me & Ollie’s coffee shop in Exeter NH. An excellent shop with a tree shaded patio over looking the Main Street of this post card pretty little town. Three of us missed the SAG stop due to navigational errors and got some bonus miles, so the stop for coffee and a muffin was very timely.
As we neared Portsmouth the land flattened and the air cooled from the sea breezes. We stopped at the high school in Rye to let everyone arrive and await the police escort. Neil had been designated as our most inspirational rider, so he donned a yellow rain jacket “cape” and led us to the beach behind the flashing lights of the police cruiser.
Once at the beach we wound our way with bikes through curious beachgoers to perform the ceremonial wheel dip. In addition our tandem cycle riders had been designated to do the ceremonial water pour. Apparently the Atlantic is a few inches lower than the Pacific, so ABB is doing its best to level things out by carrying a water bottle of Pacific water along on the ride and having a rider pour it into the Atlantic.
With that the official ride was over. After, handshakes, goodbyes and promises to stay in touch we rode away to our hotel to take care of bike logistics and get ready to fly home.
Scratch one off the bucket list. An adventure to remember and savor for rest of my life. Now I’m looking forward to getting back home to my best friend and the love of my life Jacquie. Thanks for your love and support through this journey Sweetie !
